Nathalie Salmon House, Chicago, IL

Nathalie Salmon House is a five-story, 53-unit building built on the north side of Chicago. This is an intergenerational facility for both older individuals, families, and young adults. The senior population live in 28 private apartments on the first four floors and in 15 units on the fifth floor. The facility also includes 6 units for younger Resident Assistants who provide services and companionship in exchange for room, board, and employment. Finally, there are 4 three-bedroom family apartments, distributed on the first four floors.

The intergenerational residences are designed as a family-style housing model - that is, shared meals, common areas, and activities - for seniors and young adults. The facility emphasizes that its senior residences are a variation of independent living for older adults without a family, who seek opportunities to socialize. The building is designed to be accessible for people with disabilities, and successfully integrates into the community that provides local shops, parks, and area transportation.
